About Ubuntu

Introduction

The Ubuntu developers are hurrying to bring you the absolute latest and greatest software the Open Source Community has to offer. Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 5 is the fifth alpha release of Ubuntu 7.10, and this alpha release brings a host of excellent new features.

Note: This is still an alpha release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released in October 2007.

In General

Upgrading from Feisty

If you upgrade from feisty, please make sure that you have update-manager 0.59.23 from feisty-updates installed. Then run "update-manager -d".

GNOME 2.19.90

As usual, this tribe brings you the latest and greatest GNOME (the first public beta of what will soon become 2.20), with a lot of bug fixes compared to Tribe 4.

Graphical configuration tool for X

You can now configure what driver you want to use for your graphic card, set up dual monitors, change the default resolution for all users or change your monitor's refresh rate without having to turn to the terminal. A new GUI has been added making it trivial to adjust your video and monitor settings.

New Features for Firefox

Ubufox ships two new, hot Ubuntu Firefox features - Apt-Enabled Plugin Finder Wizard and Extension Manager integration.

New Printing System

A lot of effort has gone into the printing system.

Ubuntu now creates a virtual "PDF printer" by default, which you can use to generate PDF files from all applications that do not have native PDF output support, like GIMP, Firefox, and other non-Gnome applications.

The old, unmaintained gnome-cups-manager has been replaced with system-config-printer, a printer management application from Fedora. We now have a well maintained piece of software, and good collaboration with Tim Waugh, assisted by Till Kamppeter who has been doing an amazing job, and has made big improvements on it.

Thanks to hal-cups-utils, printers are now automatically, fully configured by merely plugging them in and turning them on. Printer setup cannot get any easier!

At last, the cupsys printer system has been upgraded to the new 1.3 series (http://www.cups.org/articles.php?L485). Its AppArmor profile for security protection is now enabled by default. It still breaks a few third-party printer drivers, so make sure to file bugs if that happens to you.
