Introduction
The Ubuntu developers are moving very quickly to bring you the absolute latest and greatest software the Open Source Community has to offer. Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 3 is the third alpha release of Ubuntu 7.10, and with this new alpha release comes a whole host of excellent new features.
Note: This is still an alpha release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released in October 2007.
In General
These features are showcased for your attention. Please test them and report any bugs you find. If you want to see what the developers have cooking for the next alpha release take a look through the gutsy blueprint page https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/gutsy.
Upgrading from Feisty
If you upgrade from feisty, please make sure that you have update-manager 0.59.23 from feisty-proposed installed. Then run "update-manager -d".
Latest Compiz Fusion
As part of delivering the latest new desktop shinyness in Linux-land, the latest Compiz Fusion is available. For those in wondering, the complete set of plugins to be installed by default can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CompositeByDefault
Gnome 2.19.5
Tribe 3 contains the latest GNOME 2.19.5, the 5th alpha release on the way to GNOME 2.20, due in September. This release contains a whole host of bug fixes and other small features.
Appearance capplet
By popular demand, the various theme, background and other appearance related tools have now been merged into a single dialog, aloowing faster access to more settings. With an Ubuntu-specific change, you can also now choose whether or not to use Compiz Fusion in the Desktop Effects tab.
Power profiles
The new GNOME-power-manager will now profile your battery to get a more accurate picture of your battery lifespan and will not activate any power saving features until this is done, leading to better experience for laptop users.
Improvements to Rhythmbox
The new Rhythmbox 0.11.1 contains gapless playback and better support for visualization. For those who use the online stores, Rhythmbox now supports the use of Magnatune giftcards and a greatly reduced memory usage of the Jamendo download area. Of course, what would a music player be without the ability to put that music on portable players, and this version of Rhythmbox includes better support for a whole raft, as well as the ability to write art out to iPods.
Server
With Gutsy, the Server Team has grown and expanded and major work is being done to make the server as easy install and use as the desktop. To this end, we have seen the packaging of Ebox, a configuration tool, as well as a lot of bug fixing and new versions of many popular server packages.
Ebox
Ebox is a network services control tool. Designed to be easy to use even for non-Unix admins, Ebox allows control of a huge number of services from a single web interface. Parts of the 0.9.3 release has been packaged and many Ubuntu-specific changes have been made. Stay tuned for the rest of the goodness.
AppArmor
A lot of work went into AppArmor, a framework for provinding enhanced proactive security through mandatory access control, i. e. minimize the privileges of processes to greatly reduce the potential impact of security vulnerabilities. A first set of profiles is also available.
Please see the tutorial for how to install and activate it.

Caveats
There are a few known high-impact flaws which you don't need to bother reporting if you encounter them:
-
The desktop CD hangs on a lot of systems, especially slower ones with little RAM. Sometimes it is just slow, sometimes it will hang eternally. If you experience this and waiting a bit longer does not help, try to restart the computer and the live CD. If that still does not help, please use the alternate CD. (https://launchpad.net/bugs/126964)
-
On Edubuntu server installs, the "Building LTSP root" step takes a very long time (in the order of 15 minutes) without visible progress. It will eventually finish, though. (https://launchpad.net/bugs/121547)
Reporting Bugs
Gutsy Gibbon has bugs! (I bet you're not surprised.) Your comments, bug reports, patches and suggestions will help fix bugs and improve future releases. Please report bugs through the ubuntu bugtracker
If the graphical system does not come up or is very slow, please file a bug against compiz and include in your bugreport a copy of the files ~/.xsession-errors, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and the output of glxinfo and xdpyinfo.
If you want to help with bugs, the Bug Squad is always looking for help.
