Ubuntu Software Centre

The Ubuntu Software Centre gives you instant access to thousands of apps. With the Ubuntu 11.10 redesign, you can see the top-rated apps, compare apps by rating and user reviews, keep track of what you’ve installed, and sync your apps between all your Ubuntu computers.

The launcher

It’s pretty hard to miss the launcher that sits on the left-hand side of your screen. It’s designed to make getting to your favourite tools and applications quick and easy. You can hide and reveal it, add and remove applications and bookmarks, and keep track of your open windows.

Move your cursor to the left-hand side of your screen to reveal the launcher.

Keep track of your open applications with our handy arrows.

Superkey shortcut: Hold down the superkey to view the launcher.

The dash

When you click on the Ubuntu logo in the top-left corner of the launcher, the new dash will appear. It’s another simple way to get to your shortcuts and search for other applications and programs. So you can get fast access to your email, music, pictures and much more. And you can search by type of app or file with our new filters menu.

Click on the Ubuntu logo to get to your apps, programs and shortcuts.

Look for apps and programs by typing into the search box.

Access your apps, emails, pictures, music and more, fast.

Press escape on your keyboard at any time to leave the dash.

The launcher will be disabled when you’re in the dash.

Application switching

Ubuntu 11.10 gives you a really easy way to manage multiple windows and applications. You can use Alt + Tab and Alt + Grave to switch between applications or application windows. No more cramping multiple apps into a small space.

FAQs

  • Where will I find all my files?

    Your files will be right where you left them. Simply click on the Home Folder icon in the launcher to find your saved documents.

  • Can I upgrade from my current version?

    Yes! You can follow the same upgrade process as normal. Simply upgrade from the Update Manager.

  • What will happen to my settings?

    No need to worry… your files and bookmarks will stay the same.

  • Will it work with my hardware?

    Ubuntu 11.10 is built to take advantage of the very latest technologies, but it should work on most desktops, laptops and netbooks too.
