File and Print
Sharing files with Linux, Windows (r) and Mac (r) is made as simple as ticking a box in the installation process. Samba file and print serving are immediately installed and even ready to be integrated with a Windows domain or Active Directory server if you would like to insert it within a pre-existing infrastructure, through the addition in our 8.04 version, of likewise-open.
Samba 3 supports all the features that you would expect from a CIFS server, including:
-
NetBIOS over TCP/IP (Windows protocol to discover file shares)
-
SMB and CIFS (the Windows file sharing protocols)
-
MSRPC (Windows network neighborhood protocol)
-
WINS name serving over NetBIOS
-
NT Domain Logon
-
SAM databases
-
NTLM and Active Directory logon
-
Kerberos
-
LDAP
-
Print serving
Printers can also be shared by CUPS, which now supports all major platforms' automatic discovery features so that clients can easily find the most convenient printers. Linux and MacOSX users can start using them right away without having to install any drivers prior to use. CUPS also support Windows clients, though configuring them will still require some work.. CUPS provides, among other features:
-
IPP - the standard protocol for printing locally or across the internet
-
Bonjour & Zeroconf protocols support for simplified discovery and configuration
-
LPD Helper for legacy Unix printing
-
Postscript, JetDirect and SMB backend support
-
Web, Gnome or KDE based administration interface
