Ubuntu on ARM

The Ubuntu project is excited to be working with the ARM ecosystem to port Ubuntu for ARM-based devices. This work fits with our goals of making Ubuntu available as an open platform to as many people as possible.

Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition is the second version of Ubuntu to officially support ARM architectures. Ubuntu 9.10 on ARM is designed to run on hardware that is generally only available in prototype to developers. So while the software is fully available for anyone that wants to use it, it will generally only run well on the hardware specified below.

In addition to the work that Ubuntu is distributing, our ARM partners are making sure that proprietary software and drivers that might further optimise user experiences works perfectly with Ubuntu 9.10. OEMs interested in access to this additional code should make contact with the specific chip vendor or send an email to 'arm at canonical dot com'.

Which ARM architectures run Ubuntu 9.10?

For Ubuntu 9.10 , the two platforms we support are:

  • Freescale i.MX51 Babbage boards (2.x boards are supported and 3.0  boards are untested but expected to mostly work)
  • Marvell Dove boards (Y0 and Y1 boards)

Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition for ARM will be supported for 18 months.
