Andalusia deploys 220,000 Ubuntu desktops in schools throughout the region

Isotrol and Canonical's Premium Service Engineer (PSE) support service delivered an improved learning experience to 600,000 students in Andalusia, Spain. The Andalusian Regional Government, Spain, wanted to improve access to IT in schools throughout the region. It asked IT services company infrastructure to connect 2,000 schools in Andalusia. Isotrol implemented 220,000 Ubuntu-based workstations in more than 2,000 schools throughout the region. Now, technology plays an integral role in delivering a more dynamic learning experience in schools across Andalusia. Teachers and students can share information quickly and easily, while each school receives dedicated support from a centralised support service.

Emphony Technologies achieves 100 per cent uptime with Ubuntu

New business Emphony Technologies needed to implement a cost-effective, reliable and available IT infrastructure. It wanted to introduce a server environment on which its infrastructure that project management applications and common workloads could both run. The company chose to implement Ubuntu Server Edition. As a result, the organisation has an easy-to-maintain, cost-effective, reliable infrastructure on which it can depend. Neither Emphony, nor its customers, have experienced any downtime since the implementation took place over a year ago. As it moves into full production, Emphony is now looking to adopt Canonical Support with Landscape systems management software to help it grow as a business.

Equitec chooses Ubuntu and cuts server infrastructure by 70 per cent

Financial services company Equitec was running its mission-critical, proprietary trading software on 100 Windows-based servers. After experiencing a series of performance issues, the company decided to upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. Now Equitec can run its entire workload on just 30 Ubuntu-based servers, which equates to a dramatic hardware, space and power saving of 70 per cent for the same performance. Additionally, Equitec has experienced significant reduction in systems management overheads, running its critical common workloads and its trading system with a minimum of fuss, outage or maintenance. The company is seeing a very real reduction in the total cost of ownership (TCO) of its IT infrastructure through switching its servers to Ubuntu.

The UCL Institute of Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital maximise resources with standardised infrastructure

The UCL Institute of Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital wanted to replace the disparate server infrastructure on which their joint website was running. The Institute of Child Health decided to introduce a cost-effective solution that could maximise resources, ease management and enhance business continuity. It worked with solutions provider Fry-IT to implement an IT environment based on Ubuntu Server Edition and OpenVZ virtualization software. As a result, it expects to reduce the number of physical servers it runs from 11 to four. With a standardised infrastructure in place, the IT team has dramatically simplified maintenance and disaster recovery processes, while making considerable cost savings.

Film site reduces upgrade times from days to minutes

Kinopoisk, a Russian film website similar to IMDb, needed to implement a new server infrastructure that would simplify maintenance and scale to meet its future requirements. After testing a range of server technologies, the company chose to introduce 15 servers based on Ubuntu Server Edition. As a result, it has reduced the time it takes to perform upgrades from days to 15 minutes. It can also deploy and set up new servers more quickly, and has greater confidence that it has a server infrastructure on which it can depend.

Metal Sales deploys mission-critical servers five times faster with Ubuntu

US-based Metal Sales Manufacturing needed to upgrade its server infrastructure so that it could accelerate processes, integrate new applications and scale to meet future requirements. The company needed to implement a cost-effective solution that could improve efficiencies across the organisation. Metal Sales chose to implement Ubuntu Server long-term support offering and seamless deployment. It found that it could deploy Ubuntu five times more quickly than alternative server platforms. With no superfluous applications and easy integration with existing hardware, Ubuntu is a reliable, high-performing platform on which Metal Sales can run its mission-critical activities.

AMTRON delivers 28,000 Ubuntu-based PCs to students in Assam

India-based government information and communication technologies (ICT) provider The Assam Electronics Development Corporation (AMTRON) needed to provide every Assam student who achieved 60 per cent or higher in their school leaving exams with a free PC. AMTRON needed to comply with strict budgets to deliver reliable, easy-to-use PCs to thousands of students. It finally decided on a range of PC hardware running Ubuntu Desktop Edition. It delivered 14,000 Ubuntu-based PCs in 2008 and is in the process of delivering a further 14,000 Ubuntu-based PCs in 2009. The cost-effective Ubuntu Desktop Edition solution is free, easy to use and very popular with the students of Assam.

The challenge “is getting a major website on the air—or web—and running it without too much money and not too many resources in terms of people,” ...the whole idea that Canonical backstops the Ubuntu distribution with well-organised updates and patches was a big draw for Wikimedia.
